Cybersecurity Regulations in 2020: What you need to know

The Federal and State Governments are starting to take cybersecurity very seriously. Several states have passed new cybersecurity regulations that recently went into effect or go into effect this year including California’s CCPA, Ohio’s Data Protection Act, New York’s SHIELD law and Nevada’s SB 220.

Even if your business is not located in any of these states, if you do business or have customers in those locations, you and your company may still be subject to the state data regulations from those locales. To complicate matters further, there are international regulations like the EU’s GDPR and federal regulations like HIPAA, FISMA and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act that your business may be subject to as well.

With even newer regulations being proposed by nearly every state, the cyber regulation landscape is only going to get more complicated. If your company has not addressed cybersecurity fundamentals or cybersecurity compliance, you could be risking significant sanctions, fines and even jail time.
